Lack of insurance linked to nearly 45,000 unnecessary deaths a year: peer-reviewed study American Journal Public Health Assuming that 7,000 people died in the Twin Towers (directly and indirectly), then this is equivalent to a Twin Towers bombing every other month. Year in and year out. And of the 45,000 direct deaths, how many other people indirectly died?

If the number of people who were going to die from lack of insurance gathered in a single place each and every month, and were blown up would there be any outrage? Im certain there would be outrage if they were blown to smithereens... ...seeing as how everyone on earth is entitled to LIFE. But since when is everyone entitled to INSURANCE? I have a big problem with being asked to pick up the tab for other people's heathcare insurance.

Why? Well, because, no one assists me in paying for my health insurance, my house insurance, my car insurance, or my earthquake insurance. So why should I contribute to someone else's insurance?

Now, don't get me wrong - I feel sympathy for those that cannot afford insurance, those that die due to lack of insurance, those that have lost their insurance, etc. But lets get something clear here - there isnt a single person on the face if this earth who has died due to a "lack of insurance. " People typically die due to being unable to afford the treatments associated with their illnesses. So, the direct cause of death in every case is lack of treatment. THe REAL problem here in the USA is the costs associated with treatment - costs that have skyrocketed due to medical malpractice lawsuits, out of control educational costs and out of control insurance costs for malpractice insurance.

If the Govt was able to control the cost of education for doctors, control the cost of insurance and stop frivilous malpractice suits, it would go a long way to reducing the overall cost of treatment - and thus lower the overall cost of insurance so that it is affordable to the masses. But instead, it is easier to just steal from the tax payers to fix a broken system. Genius... rather than fixing the source of the problem, they just throw money at it.

Another huge problem with our system is that we are a reactionary system that waits for and then REACTS to disease, rather than being preventative in nature and trying to stop disease - take Kaiser, for instance. They refuse to give me Chantix to help me stop smoking (its $200/month! ) but they are more than happy to treat me when I come down with lung cancer.

Of course, the other half of me wonders - what exactly is an "unnecessary death"? Isnt all death necessary to life? .

I have always thought that citizens welfare was paramount in a civilized country... Some relevant observations, from an earlier question I answered about cheap imports from China taking your jobs, it is also relevant to your current strife: I was watching a documentary on the airplane bone yard in Arizona. This yard revealed only a fraction of the ’left over’ from massive spending on the military over the years by your government. They have spent trillions on useless military crap, that much off has never been used.

I think it’s time Americans stood up and demanded that governments started looking at the society it has created. With social decay, crime, poverty, lack of infrastructure, poor services, poor pay and conditions of many of its workers has your government got its priorities right? I don’t think so.

You have a government that is obsessed with international interference in other countries. It has caused massive pain and cost to your economy. Why is it so?

It has been this way for years. Demand that your government ’fix’ your homeland, not someone else’s. You need a proper medical system, like our Medicare.

You need to reduce military spending and concentrate on important infrastructure. Tackle important issues like the environment, poverty, urban decay, crime and social issues. Why Obama is called the first possible ’black’ president is strange.

Isn’t he just another American? Who cares if he is black? I am an outsider, I do like and have seen much of your country, but you have so much to fix, and not just roads and bridges.

Yes, your taxes would be better spent on important infrastructure, not useless Chinese junk that you don’t need and won’t help your economy. Go to it! It about sums up your (perhaps previous) government’s priorities. As we do in Oz everyone should have basic health cover.

If you fall ill everyone should be able to go to a public hospital and be treated for free. It cost about $60 to see a local doctor and you are rebated about $34.It is an absolute priority and necessity for a stable social structure. We pay a small levy in our taxes.

If you want your own doctor and a private hospital then you can take out insurance. It’s your choice. It is difficult for me to comment on your system as I do not know enough about it. I am staggered that you can be billed thousands of dollars if you fail to have insurance.

How do the poor cope? And what about the unemployed and the lowly paid workers? I would not like to be in your current situation.

This is realized through an ability to comprehend the 'bigger picture' I completely agree with your assessment of this undenyable fact. Yet, for some reason, it is easier for people to accept the unacceptable when they dip into it one inch at at time, than when jumping in all at once, as in the event of a bombing. Perhaps this atrocity of judgment occurs because the the amazing ability of the human being to adapt, which in this case, works horrible against them.

Living with incremental ignorance seems to have a numbing effect to most. It becomes like a drone in the background, and their sensibility cannot truly grasp the sheer insanity of what they have ’always been subjected to’......What better example of this, than the way we are slowly bled, day by day, year by year, until dead, by the Insurance companies? We’re used to it after all.

That’s life. Wrong, that is a deadly criminal act. Its not life at all.

Its madness. Its madness for these businesses to sentence humanity to death at the hand of their own self interest, and its madness for humanity to just sit and take it. Put any number of people together who have died the same way all around the country, and the ’bigger picture’ suddenly crystalizes.

Its as if you need a telescopic mind to understand, that time and space do not lesson the blow, nor do they provide a rational excuse for wholly unacceptable circumstances. People cling to excuses. They use them to tell themselves, "Oh, its not that bad.It doesn’t happen that often.

I don’t know anyone who has died at the hand of a Health Insurance company. I don’t know if I really believe that" That’s because it doesn’t come rushing at them to press its cutting edges into their personal life the way a bomb aimed at a building would do. A bomb killing two people gets more attention than a business blunder killing 45000 people!

What does this say about humanity at large? Its called ’blinders’....most people don’t want to know the truth, and Insurance Companies count on this. How else could they get away with this egregious behavior?

People don’t want to believe there could be an injustice of such proportion. They need to wake up. But there are those of us who have worked at tearing off the blinders, and succeeded.

The bigger picture is glaringly evident and it is absolutely unacceptable! People have to WAKE UP! Because these criminals are fighting hard to keep their houses in every port and their ten thousand dollar umbrella stands while their innocent, wonderful, but fatally ill fellow man, lays cold at the hand of wholly unnecessary greed and the black heart of loveless corporations.

An American dies every 12 minutes from a lack of health insurance: **************************************************** Read this article: "The Institute of Medicine, using older studies, estimated that one American dies every 30 minutes from lack of health insurance. Even this grim figure is an underestimate. Now one dies every 12 minutes."

Read more: digitaljournal.com/article/279409 ******************************************************** There are people that argue, "No one dies because of a lack of health insurance". They say that the people died from lack of calling 911, or lack of proper health. That argument is as ridiculous as saying "No one that is poor is uneducated or under-privileged".

************************************************ This article provides another frightful thought regarding our health crisis: msnbc.msn.com/id/29211193/ If nurses are already THIS overwhelmed, what will happen if we really do suffer a pandemic of epic proportions as health experts keep saying we're over-due for? No, maybe swine flu won't be as bad as once was thought. However, if nurses are backing out before it hits, what *if* it does cause an influx of ER visits later this winter?

How many will die just because of a nurse shortage? Who's going to keep track of how many people die of the flu because they lacked insurance? As I stated in the DB, my family is insured, but we DO NOT go to the doctor unless ill.

We do take our son to get his vaccinations. We do NOT go for normal health screenings for ourselves though, as our co-pays are too high. What if one of us is growing cancer now?

What if we don't find out until it's too late? We'd be one of those "insured" statistics, not one of the "uninsured". ***********Then, to answer your question directly: How many are indirectly affected?

IMHO~More people die due to a lack of health coverage than just the uninsured. I'd guess that whatever number a study would report would be too low. This is NOT just a medical question, but a financial one, as well.

And, most people do NOT readily discuss their finances with anyone, including their doctor (*if* they're *lucky* enough to be insured). Sources: S~L Video Maybe we'll have to move? .

My apologies for the double post. I'm not sure how that happened.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
