It all depends on the temperature in the day and night and the setting on your thermostat. For most people in average weather it does not make that much difference. A thermostat with a timer will take all that difference out of play.

I was in an apartment and I had the same problem. I know what you mean. On days you are home, adjust to your comfort.

When you are away set it high in the summer and lower in the winter. But not too drastic. The cost of leaving it on will not be that much.

But try it a few months and see if you notice the difference in the bills. I do not think it will be more than $20 or $40 different. You have to decide if that is serious or not.

This has been tested. Most of the time they said it took as much to cool a warmer house as it did to keep it cooler all day long.

Best to add some insualtion if you want to make a difference. Or patch some leaks.

The other factor to consider - every moment that your compressor is running (which is what is doing the cooling) is one moment of reduced lifespan. So the more you run it, the sooner you wear it out.

When I lived in Blythe, CA during the week (home of the 125 degree F. Temperature), I left it off while at work and merely turned it on when I got home. The apartment cooled fast enough.

And I like it warm, anyway.
