Light Bulbs: The light bulb gremlins have set up camp in my house. They scurry around from lamp to lamp . .. And out go the bulbs!
What is the best type of replacement? How good are the long lasting flourescent ones? Any other suggestions?

I'm glad you asked. As far as I'm concerned, incandescent bulbs come in two basic types: Long lasting 130V rated bulbs, and cheap 120V bulbs. I explain this to people as: if you are going to be driving 55 mph, do you want a car that is engineered to go no faster than 55 mph, ever, or do you want a car that is engineered to have a sustained cruising speed of 55 MPH.
A 120V rated bulb has no margin for any power surge, and is much more likely to burn out prematurely than a bulb rated for 130V. Modern compact fluorescent (CFL) replacement bulbs are leaps and bounds better than yesteryear's. The only caveat is to buy good quality ones, and understand that some people are sensitive to fluorescent light.
If you are, you won't be able to tolerate them. Also, CFL bulbs have a warm up period. They reach maximum brightness (and efficiency) in about a minute.
If you have a storage room where you only turn on the light for 30 seconds once a week, it may not be worth the investment to go to fluorescent there. (in a clothes closet you should have fluorescent for safety reasons. ) ignore myths about inrush currents and that you shouldn't ever turn them off.
Turning a fluorescent light on takes as much energy as having it on for 1/10 of a second or so. The other thing you should be aware of is that fluorescent lighting is not dimmer-friendly. To use fluorescent lights on a dimmer requires a special dimmer and ballast.
Also, fluorescent bulbs and motion sensors do not always get along together well. Finally, LED lighting is maturing rapidly, but hasn't quite come of age yet. Try before you buy.In summary, for incandescent bulbs, buy 130 volt rated bulbs if possible, buy CFL bulbs from reputable manufacturers, but don't bother investing in them for lights you hardly ever use, and try LED bulbs before you commit.

1 I hate it when that happens. I started switching to those compact flurescent ones. They don't blow out like the older ones (have an old house and frequently when you turn a switch on the bulbs blow) .

4 Hahahaha! My gremlins go for the light bulbs first, and when they get bored with that, they adjust door frames so the doors won't close. They started with the bathroom door .. .Naturally.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
