Looking for a Macro/Portrait lens for my Nikon d90. I want a macro/portrait lens. I have about $700 to spend.
I don't mind if it is Nikon or Tamron or Sigma, but I would prefer a zoom lens. Just let me know what your opinions are. Thanks!

Well.. First off, all true Macro Lenses that give a 1:1 reproduction will be fixed focal length. A lot of Telephoto lense will let you get in close, and have the general term "Macro" applied to them, but they will not do a 1:1 reproduction (on film or full frame). And because of the way a true Macro lens is designed, you get a lot shallower Depth of Field with them, compared to other lenses, partly because of how close you get to the subject.
For a true Macro Lens I would suggest the Tamron 180MM Macro SP F3.5. Its an awesome lens. I use to have one, and now shoot the Canon Pro version at the same MM. For the $$ the Tamron will give you the most Bang for the buck.
The sigmas are going to be very soft on the edge, and thus makes it very hard to do full shots as well as Portraits with them. The Tamron Macro you can use for Portraits as well. Otherwise, for Portraits and "Macro" type photography, get the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 SP.
It will give you a shallow Depth of Field for your Portraits as well as good low light shooting for outdoor Macro and people work as well. The Nikon 105mm Macro is also a very nice lens, but Overall, The Tamrons will work as good or better for you, and both are thier Pro (SP) grade glass. Enjoy and Happy Shooting.
BTW here are a few I did with my 180 MM Macro lens (a few more on my site you can see also, and a few on the Tamron photosharing site also) Self Portrait I did. F3.5, 1/25, ISO 200 With Remote shutter release This was F32 @ 1/3 sec, ISO 200.(I try to have the camera info avail on my photos on my site for people to see if interested btw.) F32, 6sec, ISO 200 Those were all with my 180mm Macro. Now these are witm my 70-200 F2.8 lens.
Cant get as close, as the Macro can but works well for a lot of different shooting as well. F32, 1/80, iso 200, 160mm F7.1, 1/80, iso 200, 75mm F4, 1/250, ISO 100, 200mm (one of my fav flower shots I have done) Hope this helps you out. Have a great one and Happy shooting... Nikon 60 is just about perfect Nikon 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S is just about perfect for both. Ken Rockwell a very well respected photographer speaks highly of the lens. The fast aperture lets you take great portraits, the lens quality is top-notch and the price is pretty darn hard to beat.
Other options - Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Medium Telephoto Macro Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras - Cheaper but on a D90 I think it will be a little too much zoom for a good portrait lens. Unless you are only shooting outside but even then you will have to be a good distance from your subject. Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras - very cheap or I should say great price.
I don't have any direct experience with this lens but feel it could be a little on the short side and not such an impressive macro Good luck and Happy Shooting! .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
