I'm from the area. For day trips I have a few suggestions: indoor stuff: - Monterey, the aquarium is magnificent and mostly indoors - Winchester Mystery House, it's in San Jose and has a pretty cool history - The Exploratorium, in San Francisco, some really cool exhibits and lots of fun - The Tech, in San Jose, same as Exploratorium - The Children's Discovery Museum, in San Jose, same as Exploratorium - Laser Quest, it's an indoor laser tag arena in Mountain View outdoor stuff: - San Francisco Zoo, I love it - Oakland Zoo, not as good as SF zoo, but if your closer it's a good second - Alcatraz, it may be too late to get a reservation on the boat though - Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39, right near Alcatraz, so they could all go together - Malibu Grand Prix, go-carts, mini golf, and an arcade, so if it starts raining you can go inside The weather has been pretty good, not too wet, but kinda cold, so you may be able to do outside things. I believe all these places have a website, to check out more information.

You will have a wonderful week! Don’t know what you mean by challenging weather. Weather.com predicts nice weather in the 40s and 50s.

Don’t know age of family members. I will assume there are some under 21. Here are some ideas: Alcatraz Chinatown Golden Gate Park sfgate.com/traveler/guide/sf/neighborhoo... Take the cable car round trip at least once a day to keep the kids happy Go to the Golden Gate Bridge Observation area Sausalito Muir Woods Drive up Rt.1 for beautiful windy road to Stinson Beach or Point Reyes National Seashore (if your teenager wants to drive, let them have the northbound part...) Napa Valley wineries (assuming you have all adults and assuming they are not closed for the holidays) Local universities: UCal-Berkeley in Berkeley; Stanford in Palo Alto Monterey and Carmel Big Sur Check out the seals at any number of beaches Hearst Castle, San Simeon http://www.hearstcastle.com/ (this is a long day trip) San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara are beautiful, but even further http://frommers.com/destinations/sanfrancisco/ is an excellent place for additional ideas.

Not sure where in the Bay Area, or the ages of the children, so here are some thoughts: The Exploratorium in San Francisco. Lots of really fun, interactive stuff to do there. My family spent hours there!

exploratorium.edu/ In Berkeley, there's the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley lawrencehallofscience.org/ If you are going to be in the San Jose area, there are several choices: The Children's Discovery Museum: http://www.cdm.org/index.asp?f=1 The Tech Museum of Innovation: http://www.thetech.org/ Also really fun for hours. Kids can design their own roller coaster, then take a virtual ride on the coaster they designed, they can design bikes, there's an IMAX theater. It's a great place.

The Rosicrucian Museum: http://www.rosicrucian.org/ Mummies! Lots of really cool mummies. And, of course, there's the Winchester Mystery House!

http://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/ Not great for smaller kids, but very bizarre and something you should see. If the weather turns out to be good, there are, obviously, lots of outdoor venues, too, like Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, and Jack London Square in Oakland (http://www.jacklondonsquare.com/index.php/main/entertainment/). Hope this helps, and have fun!

Rickisgirl's Recommendations The Unofficial Guide to California with Kids (Unofficial Guides) Amazon List Price: $18.99 Used from: $7.87 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5 (based on 6 reviews) I used this book a lot when my kids were little! .

I didn't go but my sister did and thought this was a hoot! Got a sweet tooth, or are you traveling with someone who does? Looking for an unusual side trip from San Francisco or Napa?

Try the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield, where you can watch Jelly Belly candies being made. Located about one hour north of San Francisco on I-80, the Jelly Belly Factory is near the route to Napa Valley or Vallejo's Marine World. No reservations are needed, but almost a half million people visit each year, and if you arrive early the place will be less crowded.

The tour lasts forty minutes, but expect to stay sixty to ninety minutes, depending on tour frequency. On weekdays when the factory is working, visitors view the live action from enclosed walkways above the factory floor. On weekends, holidays, and during the annual plant shutdown at the end of June, guides rely on videos showing the factory in action. As the guides lead you above a rainbow-colored sea of trays and bins, they gush information and trivia, relating that it takes seven to ten days to make each of the 1.25 million beans finished each day.

With steam baths, sugar showers and lots of rest, the process sounds more like a spa than a factory, but at the end, all the Jelly Bellies wind up in the "engrossing pan," a copper clothes dryer-like contraption, where they get four flavored syrup and sugar coats. After they're polished, a printer emblazons the Jelly Belly logo on every one. The tour's sweetest part is at the end, when guides hand out samples, and everyone heads for the shop to buy "Belly Flops," imperfect candies sold at a discount.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
