Looking for old science fiction book where a man ends up on an alien planet with a black bitter ocean that is drinkable?

Looking for old science fiction book where a man ends up on an alien planet with a black bitter ocean that is drinkable. I found the book in a library as a child around 1978-1980 or so. Not sure what era the book is, it could have been written in the 50s or 60's or even 70's.

I just remember that the main character discovered that the black sea was drinkable and could sustain him and the landscape was very alien and bleak. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
