English is by far the most prestigious language in Singapore. It's the most widely spoken language in the government and colleges. Back in the 1970s, it was spoken as a mother tongue by virtually no one, but now a huge amount of toddlers are being raised in English.
After, I would say it comes Chinese, cause it is still the first language of the majority of the population, even if English is currently defying its position. Then, it comes Malay and Tamil, which are also official languages on their own but are not as much spoken as English and Chinese (either Mandarin proper or several Chinese dialects). And last but not least it comes Singlish, which is a creole language based on English, but it can't be understood by those who speak proper English.
This last one is very problematic, indeed. Though on the one hand there is an important amount of people who consider it to be a language on its own and an important part of Singaporean culture worth being preserved, on the other one the majority of Singaporeans regard it as a badly spoken English that should be got rid of and totally replaced by proper English.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
