You can root to android 2.3.7 However the xt model is one the harder and more complex phones to root. If you get it rooted send me a message and I'll get you the rom for 2.3.7. Here is the most dumb downed tutorial possible.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
