I would worry about it............ unless your daughter will one day work from a place of business instead of going to client's homes. It is very isolating and one can place him/herself in a situation without realizing if the client is not what he/she seems to be. A lot of crazy people out there. My daughter is a Counselor for adolescents and before she got her final State license she worked for a therapy group that would send the counselors to the children's homes.
I recall she telling me how strange it felt being in the homes and it was difficut to get the kid's 100 % attention. Now that she has her practice, her office she feels much better. A friend's daughter is a sweedish massage therapist and she has only women as clients and she goes to their homes.
She enjoys the freedom to schedule her hours and not having to report to anyone. It took a long time for her to build up a clientelle. If I'm not mistaken she started working out of a Spa/Hairstylists/Nail salon until she realized that she could make more money on her own.
The salon cut was a little too high. I wish I had a massage therapist at home, granmabx. Enjoy it you sure deserve it.
Be her guinea pig! .
Funny Story... A lot of people like getting massages so your daughter would probably make out alright. I don't think I would like a job like that but as they say, "To each their own". :) I will tell you a story from the "other side" of the massage table.
Every Christmas me and my grown daughter go to a Charity Luncheon at a very exclusive hotel. The hotel is in a very expensive area of town. As a matter of fact a few New York celebrities have homes there. As part of raising money we have raffles for many nice gifts you can win from local vendors.
I have been going to this Christmas luncheon for years and only once won something. A necklace valued at $300. This past Christmas I won something!
It was a coupon to go to this fancy smancy Salon for a full body massage, pedicure, manicure and a facial. This is valued at hundreds of dollars. Anyway to make a long story short.
I gave this so called "win" to my daughter. The thought of having someone massage me, touch my feet and even do my nails get me so nervous. Believe it or not I have never had a manicure or a pedicure my whole life.
I do it myself. The thought of someone actually massaging me makes my hands sweat and get clammy. Hopefully your daughter will not run into someone like me!
:) .
.. It’s not a job I would want or like but it’s a noble profession. Your daughter will be giving comfort, relieving pain and helping people who hurt. I think it could be a satisfying job for her..
Alrighty then..i'm proud to tell you that i'm a pennsylvania nationally certified massage. I went to the baltimore school of massage in "2005" and took the national certification exam in 2006. I have actively practiced since "2005".
It will be 6 years since i've been in the profession. I believe that if she is taught proper body mechanics and constantly goes to continueing education classes she'll be okay. I've worked for my employer (chiropractor) for 5 years now.
I still feel great. I love my job there is no better feeling then have a person come in chronic pain and leave feeling relief. I do suggest she join a association like the: american massage therapy association (amta).
They will keep her to date on massage therapy info. And they will also provide malpractice insurance. I met a fellow massage practitioners that have been in massage therapy for 30-40 years.
I do refuse to do home appointments, all my clients come to the chiro office and gets screened by him first, then they see me. I personally have no problem massaging strangers. I wish her the best of luck:) and if she personally has any questions she can find me on facebook.Com/brigette.reimschussel.
Nctmbhope this answers this and any other questions you may of had.
1 It's not something I'd want to do for a career option, but I know that it's pretty popular where I live. And it's not that I have anything against touching strangers, but for some reason I've never been interested in giving or receiving massages. However, I'm probably the minority.
Just about all my girlfriends go for massages on a regular basis--sometimes combining them with "spa day," and sometimes massages by themselves. (Somehow I seem to miss the point. I don't find it relaxing--I just get bored.)There is a pretty popular chain of massage places called "Massage Envy" here in the San Diego area.
We also have several schools that teach different types of massage--some along with other "wellness" or holistic treatment alternatives, and some just teaching massage. Somebody was recently saying that it was a good career in tough economic times because people might forgo expensive vacations but still allow small indulgences like this. I imagine if other areas are the same, she could be making a good move.

My 17 yr old daughter just told her therapist and me she was molested by school friend at age 12. What should I do? " "In alternative medicine, what is biodynamics?" "what is the best massage therapy school in the northeast?
" "My daughter is going to be going to school to be a CNA. What is the costs for the test?" "I am looking for LOCALS or FORMER RESIDENTS of Boise who can recommend a great massage therapist. " "Can anyone recommend an "alternative" college for my daughter who likes more "real life" and "hands on learning"?
" "Would you rather see a medical doctor or alternative medicine practitioner for minor ailments?" "Am I correct to notice a bias against evidence-based medicine here and in favor of natural or alternative medicines? " "Do you personally know anyone that has had a major medical problem cured or well treated with alternative medicine? " "Should I say something to my friend, or let it go?
