8 I'm pretty sure that 8 is the right amount of time. If the 8 week mark hits and the mother still hasent weened them then you have to wait, but normally by 8 weeks the mom has already weened them. Sources: My sister raises and sells Pit Bulls .

1 Ouch.....the poor thing. Ask the vet what is the best for the puppies, not forgetting that it is a lot for the Mom so you might start helping with additional bottle feedings. I wonder if she will reject the weakest ones.
