My dog licks his paws constantly. Should I be worried or take him to the vet? He licks mostly his front 2 paws regularly.

He also on occassion licks his back 2 paws too. I don't know why he does it. Is he just giving himself a massage or is there something wrong?

Very helpful webpage to guide you. I have a jack russel that does the same thing. At first we thought it was allergies, but she kept doing it even after isolating her in her cage.

We tried spraying apple bitters which temporarily worked. We found that if we spent more time playing with her she did it a lot less. In our case, I think she was just bored.

Here's the link to a helpful site; vetmedicine.about.com/od/diseasesconditi... Hopefully this will help you.

Could be harvest mites, stinging nettles or one of many things. If you walk your dog over or near fields, then there's a good chance that your dog has harvest or some other similar mites living between his or her feet. The warm damp environment between the toes is an ideal living/breeding ground.

If your dog has only just started biting its paws, then act as soon as you can and either spray or baith your dog's feet with a anti-flea mite spray or shampoo. However, check to make certain that the skin isn't broken otherwise you could cause your dog some harm and discomfort. As well as applying some form of antipest lotion, you should baith your dogs paws in a mild antiseptic solution, you may also find that using an over-the-counter hydrocortozine cream (as used by humans is fine) will help the itching/healing.

If you don't cure the problem, it can go on to cause serious discomfort such as calluses and open wounds. After a time, some dogs become fixated and lick their paws constantly until it becomes an obsession, sometimes lasting for years. Another possible cause for the biting is that your dog may have walked on something like a stinging nettle or thistle.

Yet again, if you know it's not mites, then baith your dogs paws in a mild antiseptic solution, dry thoroughly and apply some HC cream. If the symptopms haven't cleared up within 3 to five days, then you really should see a vet.

Could be allergies. My Sheltie was licking her paws to the point where they would bleed. The vet ran some tests and found out she was allergic to some airborne pollens and formaldehyde (I guess it's in carpet and other building materials).

My vet recommended having my dog take a Benadryl once every other day. So far, it has worked (been about 6 months) and her licking has pretty much subsided. I'd recommend a visit to the vet to see if your dog has allergies.

Here is a site that has an article about allergies in dogs. peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1... .

It's just something they do... My dog has always done this. It doesn't mean anything; it's just something they do to occupy themselves. Mine especially does it in bed - it seems to be her way of soothing and calming herself before she goes to sleep..

Our male sheltie has had problems with skin irrations between histoes. These irrations are mainly on his back paws and a friend told us that her vet said her dog licking and cleaning his feet and minor hair loss to his feet were from pollen on the ground. I looked up Riley's feet problem and agreed that his symptoms were allergic dermatitis.

Riley's feet do clear up in fall and winter. Right now he has a large postul of blood between his toes on his front foot that we popped and cleared blood and a small amt. Of puss from the wound. My husband put Perixode on it.

We are very worried about his paws. S back feet are clearing up and now it's his front feet. What can we do?

We took Riley to the vet last year and she put him on steroids and that did not sit well with Riley or us. She did a skin scrapping and didn't see anything. Please can someone help us!

Very worried parents. Judy Earnhardt @ [email protected] Thanks.

A dog will usually lick their paw if something is stuck in it or if the dog has a sore in it’s paw. You should look inside the pad and see if it has a cyst or lump in it. For saftey purposes I would bring the dog to a vet.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you and your dog. Lisa There is a wbsite called petsunlimited.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
