My father's caloric intake is ridiculously low, and he is gaining weight, how come?

All right, so he is not into healthy eating or calorie counting; but he hardly eats anything at all! He is very cedentary, granted. What does it mean when your metabolism slows down like that, is it healthy or a possible warning sign?

What helps speed it up (I do know about foods like ginger). Also, how much protein do cedentary old people need? My father is in his 70's.

Bodies slow down due to being tired and then you don't exercise and that makes you more tired and gain more .. weight. Metabolism can be slower if your thyroid is slower which you can have checked from a blood test. See if you can get him to move more and get into the sunlight.

Low sunlight causes depression. I take Vit D3 to help with depression. Biotin (in egg yolk), coenzyme Q10, rhodiola, B Vitamins and alot more, help speed up metabolism..

I mean, an average geriatric person should still be eating around 1800 calories per day (source: findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_gGENH/is_...), so I imagine that if he’s sedentary and eating less than say, 1200-1500 calories per day, he’s doing himself more harm than URL2 matter what your age, if you’re trying to lose weight, severely restricting calories is not the way to go. Not only is it unhealthy for you, but you won’t get all the nutrients your body needs, and it will assume it’s starving and your metabolism will slow to a crawl. Not good if you want to take off a few pounds!

There could also be several physical, non-dietary explanations for his inability to lose weight - an underactive thyroid, hormonal imbalances, reactions/intolerances to drugs and/or food, and even tumors can all contribute to weight gain and difficulty losing that weight. Finally, physical activity is also a big part of fitness and weight loss. I know you mentioned that he's sedentary, but even walking for a few minutes a day can make a huge difference.

The Weight Watchers program instructs people to "Move More," even if that just means placing the garbage can a few steps away from your desk so you have to physically get up to throw something out. The bottom line, is that your father should really see a doctor to rule out non-dietary reasons for his weight, and then if possible he should consult a nutritionist and devise a healthy diet plan with the goal of losing 1-2 lbs. A week.

If he can't see a nutritionist, you may want to recommend a healthy weight loss program (such as Weight Watchers). Good luck! .

Sometimes medicines can have a weight gaining effect.

2 Hmm, possibly, I'll explore that, thanks.

3 two ways to increase metabolism: exercise & eating small meals throughout the day (in response to hunger) rather than a few larger meals.
