It's best to follow all safety recommendations. Using higher wattage than manufacture recommends increases the chance that the higher wattage will melt the filament and cause a electrical shortage. And the extra heat generated by using a higher wattage than recommended could cause a fire.
Risk of heat generated fire goes up the higher you go on wattage, when the recommendation is for a lower wattage bulb. You might be able to get away from it, but why risk it? Sources: answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200... .
Don't, but... Don't. They don't put those stickers on for fun. And you'd be violating the terms of your household insurance contract. An alternative is to put in a 75 or 100W brightness CCFL bulb, which only draws about 1/4 of the wattage.
So you are putting in a 20 to 25 watt bulb, heatwise, which happens to put out the same amount of light as a 75 to 100 watt incandescent bulb.
As an electrician AND a fireman, yes, there is a real danger. You can sidestep the hazard alightly by using fluorescent bulbs that have the equivalent light output of 75W bulbs, but even compact fluorescent bulbs generate a lot of heat. If you truly NEED more light out of your fixture, I advise buying a new fixture that allows more total wattage..
I wouldn't - I was in a lighting fixture store some time ago and overheard the owner talking to a customer. He said if there is a fire in a house, the insurance company will not pay if a light bulb over the recommended wattage is found in any lamp or fixture. Besides that, a bulb that is too much wattage could really start a fire!
Don't take the chance! .
