I would think so. As stated in a comment, assuming that you aren’t step children, the answer would be yes. Even if you are step children & she raised you as her children after your parent died, I would think that you would be next of kin.
The main issue involved would be a will. A will would take precedence over relationships. If there is no will, the govt usually has a formula or pattern for dividing assets for those who die without a will.
The larger the state or more complex the issues, the more need for an attorney who understands probate. Hopefully, no other relatives contest the estate. As someone who is new to Askville, I hope you stick around after you get your answer.
Good luck.
I am sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. I would assume that if you are her children you are next of kin and should be her beneficiaries. Did she leave a will or have you to wait until matters are resolved because there was no will?
I hope it can be sorted out to your satisfaction and you have wonderful memories of your mother to keep in your hearts. Mothers are so precious to us all.
1 I would assume so, unless you are step-children. Do you have any aunts or uncles from your mother's side? If you have aunts or uncles; I would assume that you two being her children, that you would both get "first dibs" when it comes to inheritance, etc.

2 If you are her only offspring (called "issue), and you are blood relatives, then yes, you are not of kin -- if you have aunts and uncles they have no claim absent a bequest.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
