I have been involved in a couple of car restoration projects which were a Humber Sceptre belonging to my husband and a 1949 Triumph 2000 which had belonged to my late father. I can understand completely understand the desire to restore a classic car to it's former glory and see it back on the road. Firstly, is this going to be your project or your neighbors?
If you become involved, you need to establish if he is going to sell you the car as is, or if you are friends whether you will jointly own the vehicle when the work is done. Sort this out first, it can save problems later after you have spent time and money on the Buick. From what you have said, it sounds like it is worth testing the water with this car.Do you know enough about cars to do any work yourself?
Basic things to start with are replacing the battery, changing the oil and unseizing the brakes which will probably have happened if it has been standing for years. If you can't do any of the work except cleaning and helping, do you have a mechanic friend who could become involved? A lot of the older cars are easier and more basic to work on than modern ones.
Make a note of the model and the year, do some research on Google about the availability and cost of spares like brake pads or shoes, the radiator etc. The radiator will often need changing if the vehicle has been left for years, you only find out when you get the engine running and it starts leaking like a sieve! These are some of the issues to think about, yes it will be a labor of love, but it needn't be a money pit if you can do at least some of the work yourselves and there is no real time limit involved. Good luck, I hope this helps!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
