Not too computer literate, need help with MP3?

Not too computer literate, need help with MP3. I just received an MP3 player as a gift and yes I have the instruction booklet but I'm clueless. I mainly want to know if it's very difficult to download songs to it from a reliable site or should I just hand it off to one of my kids.

Any help greatly appreciated. Asked by Bear60 41 months ago Similar questions: computer literate help MP3 Consumer Electronics > MP3 Players & Accessories.

It is very easy. Some sites are easier than others. Amazon offers MP3 downloads of high-quality digital recordings of a wide range of music.

When you purchase your first one, it helps you download a small program in your browser that does the downloading for you, and stores them either in your Windows Media Player (WMP) library or your iTunes library. When the song is finished downloading, it tells you so, then you can play it in Windows Media Player (or iTunes). Both WMP and iTunes make it very easy to transfer songs to your MP3 player (iTunes may only work with iPods, though--check the iTunes help to make sure).

In WMP, you transfer the songs using the Sync menus. Just drag the songs and/or playlists from the library into your sync folder, then click Sync Now, and wait for it to finish.

It's not too difficult Purchasing MP3s online is surprisingly easy these days. By far the biggest site is Apple’s iPod music store, and if you have an iPod it’s going to be your best bet for ease of use. If you don’t, there are lots of other options, the best of which is probably Amazon’s MP3 store (amazon.com/mp3).

However, you may not need to buy any MP3s at all! If you already have your favorite music on CDs, it’s easy to make MP3 files from them. There’s no need to purchase any of the music you already own again.

If you’ve already got a big music collection, this can save you a great deal of money! I’d ask your kids to help you take care of this, but if you have an iPod or use iTunes, it’s easy enough. Just insert a music CD, choose that CD in iTunes, and click the big round button in the upper right corner.

Taking CDs and making MP3 files out of them is called "ripping CDs." You can also go the other way! If you decide to buy some MP3s of music you don’t already have, and later you want to use them on something other than your MP3 player, it’s not too difficult to "burn" them onto a music CD.

Then you can just stick it in your CD player. If you’ve got an iPod, you can do this through iTunes, but most competitive products offer similar tools. Again, the exact details on how you do this is rather dependent on your device, but since you can turn MP3s into CDs and CDs into MP3s, I wouldn’t really worry about it.

Just buy whatever is easier for you, and convert as needed. I must say, though, that being able to purchase just one song instantly online is really great. You don’t have to go pay $15 for a whole CD when all you wanted is to have just one song..

Amazon.com Your best bet for getting MP3s (without getting sued) is Amazon. Com's MP3 store. The files are all standard MP3s with no copy protection and will work on any player.

Assuming you install the Amazon downloader, it'll put all the files in directories on your hard disk. Then you probably just drag the files onto the MP3 player, unless it has software you need to use (like iPods do). It really should be very easy But your mileage will vary depending on the specific MP3 player you have and the service you choose to download from. If you enjoy music, an MP3 player is the ultimate in portable music, You can even transfer your CD's to it. If by handing it of you one of your kids, you mean that you would give it away, I would say no.

They set up these things to be as idiot-proof as possible. Get one of your kids to help you out by loading some songs first, and seeing if you like it. If you do, get him/her to teach you and enjoy your gift.

If not, you can bequeath it with a clear conscience.
