Male Gorillas are called Silverback. There are 2 species of Gorillas, Gorilla gorilla (Western) and Gorilla beringei (Eastern), each with 2 sub-species. The common name for both species are Western Gorilla and Eastern Gorilla.

They are named such because they are located on both sides of the African continent. Habitats and environments really shape a gorillas diet. Gorillas that live in the mountains have to adapt to their harsh conditions, and scrounge for whatever food they can find.

Gorillas like to stay in lower lying areas surrounding the mountains where bamboo and leaves are readily available. Gorillas also like to eat herbs, and herbs typically grow in low areas around the mountain. Occasionally, depending on the location, gorillas will climb trees to grab fruit for a meal.

Baby gorillas have to be taken care of almost as carefully as human babies. However, baby gorillas do develop faster than human babies, which helps them to be able to eat solid food in less than six months. The other main source of food for gorillas are insects.

Gorillas will eat baby or adult insects, and they can typically eat bugs up to the size of a termite. Gorillas seem to prefer leafy food though, always grabbing for leaves, shoots, stems, and more, from trees near the area that they live. If a particular area where gorillas inhabit is low on food supplies, gorillas will go ahead and eat the soil where plants normally grow.

It does not completely replace the nutrients that come from other foods, but soil does contain minerals that will help the gorillas survive for a time. Gorillas are fascinating creatures, but they are by no means fussy eaters. Gorillas will do what they have to in order to survive, and will eat almost anything they can find!
