In case you don't want it to go to the server, it is not so much JSF related. In oncomplete you can assign the value to a javascript variable and use that variable in the panel.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
