My daughter will be doing three things: one sport, one club and Girl Scouts (2x a month)...possibly a school play, too. Her sport ends in October, Girl Scouts starts this month and meets during the evening and the club meets before school, once a week. IF she makes the play, they will start practicing at the end of September about the time her sport starts to wrap up.

With all that said, she has Monday and Wednesday and Friday evenings completely free. Her sport is either on Saturday or Sunday. My son, soccer.

He was playing t-ball; however, their coach got fired and there wasn't a replacement...so the switch to soccer. Sometimes I wonder if parents are trying to live through their children...not all, just some! I knew a few that seem to doing their childhood all over again...through their children!

Nope! They need time to be kids! And they need time to be part of the family.

I let them pick what they want to do. I have guided all into the boyscouts or cubscouts for atleast 1 year, and then if they did not want to keep going that was fine but I thought it was a good way for them each to meet and get friends around their age. Also since we camp and fish a lot it was good for them that way as well.My 3 youngest love the cubscouts!

The rest I let just happen. Sometimes its a school play for one, or maybe they want to tag along and help dad with his pictures and learn about it and play with a camera ( I love it when my 2 eldest offer this and even my younger ones have wanted to go with a few times when I go shot out in the middle of nowhere or do a car show). But it also is good for them to start to feel out what they like and want to do as well as learn to make thier own choices about their likes and dislikes.

They know that if I suggest something and they don't want to do it they can tell me and its ok. Its a shame that so many families don't have that open communication. Several of my boys are not into sports, but the others love them, so its always something different and thats good for all of us.

I think too many parents are living their lost childhood thru their kids. Its more important to us all to do family things a lot instead of each one doing a ton of different things when we don't then have time to be a real family! They have friends liek that and its funny to hear those kids complain about it to my kids.

Nope, it is not what is best for the kids! A parent's #1 duty is to do what is best for the child! And taking away the child's childhood and making them do too much and not get to play and have fun is totally wrong.

A friend of mine does this with there 2 boys. He keeps asking me when and I am going to enroll my son is football or soccer or this or that. I tell him when my son says he wants to do it.

He tells me that if you don't make them do it they won't want to. I tell him that if they don't want to do it, why force them to be miserable! That is often called work, because we have to do it, and kids have homework and chores, they should be able to have fun.My son does cubscouts and its been great!

Its helped him open up and he even had his first sleepover, he is a heavy wetter, so sleepovers are often a problem but one of the moms and I were talking and someone else mentioned sleepovers and we both said, not really and the way she said it I knew why, so later her and I talked, esp. Since our boys were doing some of the events together and boom.2 weeks later he sons did a sleepover and it was each of their firsts and it was a blast, and its now a regular thing. If parents were to take the time and talk with and listen to their children about what they want to do and give them options and choices, like they will have as an adult, and let them have a say in their own life, everyone can be a lot happier!

Also my son wears the pampers size 6 or 7 to bed and after school mostly and the new underjams for sleepovers and they have worked great for him and his friends!.

My husband and I make a point not to do this. When they were first starting to join different activities, we made a rule that they only be involved in one thing at a time. Now that they are older, we still try to keep things simple, but they've gotten more involved in things, especially my son because he is older.

The difference is that he decides what he wants to do. For example, he loves basketball, so during basketball season at school, there is some overlap with choir and academic team. He wants to try out for the golf team next year when he's old enough, so that will overlap too.

The main thing that my husband and I wanted was them to have time to just be kids, playing in the yard, riding bikes, reading, playing games. I think my kids have a good balance. They are involved in things so they are learning skills and about teamwork, but they also have time just to relax and be kids.

One couple we are close to definitely over schedule their kids. Their daughter is in music lessons, a local soccer league and a travelling soccer league, volleyball at school and in a local city league, martial arts, dance class - all at the same time! The son is younger and less involved, but he's still busy too with one soccer league, martial arts, and music lessons.

You should see the calendar on their refrigerator. I don't know how they do or why they would want to. They are never together as a family because one parent is busy taking one child someplace while the other is taking the other someplace else.

They never sit down for a family meal or just watch TV or play a game as a family. I think you are probably right that a lot of parents are thinking about what they want and not their kids.

1 I know a few kids like that. My daughter just has girl scouts for now. She's not interested in sports, and doesn't have school clubs available yet.

We are going to start piano lessons and she wants to have swimming lessons. My boys don't do anything, haha! One is in kindergarten and also doesn't want anything to do with sports.

The youngest is three and will start preschool soon. I guess we're slacker parents. ;) I've always thought that three commitments outside of school would be more than enough.

That would be my limit as the chauffer, anyway.

2 I've always wondered when those kids have time to daydream, color, read a book, bake with mom or dad, ride a bike nowhere and back, climb a tree or flat out just PLAY! I'm NOT saying the old days were better, but if we wanted to play a game, we found some friends and played. There's definitely value in kids being involved in activities - they learn physical and social skills, they learn how to take turns and how to compete.

Moderation, moderation, moderation! .

Where to find the cheapest soccer equipment for children.

Is there anything I can do about the other soccer parents (from my daughter's team) who constantly yell during games.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
