It is much more complex than you seem to understand. We believe that we can become like God because Jesus promised us that we would be joint heirs with Him in the Father's Kingdom and inherit all that the Father has. The Bible says that when we see them we will see them as they are because we will be like them.

We believe that as man is, God once was and as God is, man may become. That is called the law of eternal progression. Part of God's glory is our success as His children.

If we all fail to return to Him, then He will have failed as our God. Thus, if we are faithful and obedient, we will become like Him, return to Him and be able to do as He has done. So as He has eternal spirit offspring, so we also will be able to be Gods over our eternal spirit offspring.

The cycle of eternity will continue if we are faithful. Eternal life isn't just living eternally, praising our God who made it possible, but also it is to have God's life for eternal is His name. Thus, we not only live eternally, but live as God lives.
