Very difficult. I mean, at times like yesterday it just dawns on me that Undertaker has been in WWE for 20 years! Wow!
So in an incredible 20 year career span, of course he has had legendary matches and rivalries. You can’t withstand 20 years in an industry and not have those outstanding matches or moments. So in that 20 year time span, it is extremely difficult to name the top 5 rivalries Undertaker has ever had.
But I’ll give it a try: 1. I simply must put #1 as Kane. Not only perhaps my all time favorite Undertaker rivalry, but without 1 of my all time favorite rivalries.
The 1st one to be exact. The Undertaker in my opinion is the most creative and successful gimmick to ever come out of pro wrestling. I’m sure that many thought Kane was just a rip off of him at 1st.
And if they weren’t thinking that, I’m guessing they thought it could end up like that. For a 2nd unhuman gimmick to be put in WWE was somewhat of a risk, but the reward was well worth it. It graced us all with a classic rivalry featuring a perfect storyline, a great betrayal, and classic moments.
There’s just something that appeals to me when I see “powers” being used in pro wrestling. As long as they aren’t over used in a cheesy way, I’m all for it. And in this rivalry they were used perfectly.
Kane destroyed people and things with his evil powers, and Taker once again rose from the dead after being burned in a casket. And it all culmilated in great matches such as a great Wrestlemania match and the 1st ever; and very successful might I add, Inferno Match. As you stated in a question a while back, I do not believe Undertaker and Kane have ever had a bad storyline.
They had a small, yet good storyline again in 2000. And another outstanding storyline in 2004 when Undertaker made what at the time was a long awaited Deadman return. And now it’s great to see this classic WWE rivalry being renewed today.
So far it is going good and there is still a lot they have to work with. I’d be happy with either Kane or Undertaker coming on top. I’m actually kind of leaning toward Kane’s side so he can finally experience what it’s like to top Undertaker.
But if Taker comes out on top again; no complaints for me. At least I can bet on the fact that no matter the outcome, it will be a fun ride to watch featuring great matches and a top notch storyline. 2.
Shawn Michaels. Great back in the late 90s and in my opinion even better in the new melenium. Back in the 90s HBK was the Rey Mysterio of that era.
The ultimate underdog. But in Shawn’s case, he was the underdog that always came out on top. He had an outstanding run as World Champion in 1996, and he continued on an epic role from then on too.
The odd thing about Shawn was, in his 1st run in WWE, he was ALWAYS the ultimate underdog. Most guys carry the underdog character as face. But when it’s time for a heel turn that character goes away.
Great examples are Mick Foley, Eddie Gurerro, and many others. But when Shawn made a great heel turn in 1997, he remained the ultimate underdog. He was a small guy at the time, and at that point he was the World Champion.
He faced the biggest of big men. So when the time came for the biggest heel in WWE at the time; HBK, to face the biggest face in WWE at the time; Undertaker, it looked odd on paper. Here was a heel that looked like he could never win a fight, always won, but had all the fans rooting against him.
Then there is the big bad Undertaker, who is tall, strong, and dominant; and the fans cheer for him as if he were a national hero. It was like a modern day twist on David vd Goliath; only the fans were rooting for Goliath. As if that were not enough to make the rivalry stand out, the 2 never had a bad match.
They had classic singles bouts, a great casket match, and an absolutely outstanding Hell in a Cell classic! The rivalry and matches were amazing. Had the rivalry never progressed from there, it would still be considered 1 of Undertaker’s and HBK’s greatest rivalries.
However, luckily for us it didn’t end there. In 2008 they put on an amazing rivalry and storyline that was a great psychological story. They topped it off with my all time favorite match at Wrestlemania 25.
It was an unforgettable classic that will be nearly impossible to beat as my all time favorite. However, again the story didn’t end there. It was renewed once more 1 year later leading to my favorite storyline between the 2.
I loved how HBK became obsessed with defeating Undertaker. It led to a great storyline and the most difficult match for me to ever pick a man I wanted to win. The streak is something I’d hate to see die, and HBK is perhaps my all time favorite wrestler; right up there along with Bret Hart.
The match was good, but I just didn’t see it passing their match at the previous Wrestlemania. So in conclusion, Shawn and Taker have had both tremendous matches and storylines cementing it for me, as Taker’s 2nd best rivalry of all time. 3.
This one here is a difficult choice for me. I even thought about not even putting it on the list; but I decided to do so. Undertaker and the McMahon’s.
Not just so much with the McMahon’s, but the whole scenario of Taker being heel with The Ministry of Darkness. It was great to see Taker in that light and the evil doings he did upon the McMahon family was highly entertaining to watch. So you may be asking why I didn’t want to put it on the list.
Well the reason is simply because during this time period I was forced to sneak and watch wrestling. The year of 99 was when my mother banned me from watching wrestling; so I simply snuck and watched it. So because of that reason I wasn’t really there to witness week by week what really went on with Vince and Taker.
But from what I saw it looked to be great. A great psychological storyline which let us see both Vince and Taker in a different light. Vince however proved he was meant to be heel; and Taker on the other hand proved to me that I may actually prefer him as heel.
He was an outstanding heel and during his heel run with The Ministry he gave birth to several classic moments such as hanging Stone Cold on his symbol, abducting Stephanie, almost marrying Stephanie, and cursing souls to join with him. It was fun to watch and I wish I could’ve watched it week by week. 4. Mankind.
Undoubtedly a name that simply must be on this list. Again, a big reason why it should be on it is because of your quote. Mankind had an outstanding win-loss record against Taker.
The best of anyone at that time. No one was used to seeing Taker being topped and Mankind did it quite often. The rivalry I’m talking about is the rivalry between the 2 that occurred in 1996-97.
Don’t get me wrong, their Hell in a Cell match in 1998 was an undoubtable classic, but there was definitely no major storyline in 1998 between the 2 that set up for the match. The match’s hype mainly surrounded around the innovative storyline that happened the years later. Mankind and Taker was a different kind of rivalry for WWE at the time.
2 dark characters; 1 represented good and the other evil. Along in the process they stole the show every time they locked up. I cannot honestly think of a night where they faced off and didn’t steal the show.
Their matches were so brutal and innovative for that time. They faced off in crazy matches that would still be considered highly impressive to this day. It was an amazing storyline filled with amazing matches.
However; I am sort of glad to a degree they never made it to Mania. As I said earlier, WWE hypes too much around Wrestlemania to the point where it cannot possibly live up to expectations. I am not saying they would not have delivered, all I’m saying is WWE has to save some classic matches, moments, and rivalries for other nights.
Maybe that’s why you haven’t cared so much for the ppvs of 2010. WWE is focusing all their great match ideas and storylines for Wrestlemania. Meanwhile every other ppv seems to get neglected of superior quality.
WWE needs to focus more around other ppvs. I think they should save some classic matches and rivalries for other ppvs. Much like they did with WWE and Nexus. 5. And now the hard part.
After 20 years of great rivalries I must make a final pick to be on the top 5 list. And the rivalry I choose is…Undertaker and Randy Orton. Though the original Deadman had been back for quite sometime, he finally reached the point where his “powers” were used in an incredible storyline.
As you stated, this rivalry paved the way for such big hype around The Streak. It had already been mentioned several times in WWE, but for the 1st time Orton and Undertaker’s Mania match surrounded around the streak. Before this match, no other match of Taker’s had done that.
It was a pretty good build up featuring a very good match. Time passed and a few months later they renewed it and had a decent match at Summerslam. That launched their bigger and better storyline off.
In what I sort of consider a rip off; Orton burned Taker in a casket and killed him. Yet a month later (I was there live) he had an incredible return and cleaned house. Again Orton killed him by ramming him through the stage with a car, and again Taker came back to life.
This was the original Taker that we hadn’t seen since 98. The Taker that could rise from the dead. In the weeks following great yet underrated moments occurred with Taker stalking down Orton and Orton having creepy hillusinations.
It was a great build up that was finished off with Taker and Orton having a very good Hell in a Cell match with the urn returning! With no question I would consider this the feud of the year for 2005. It held most peoples attention for nearly a year and several matches following 1 another.
It was a great rivalry that really restablished Undertaker in the WWE. My Honorable Mentions: JBL: Just short of making #5. Though Orton made Taker’s old character sho.
WOW! This is Psycho Dude 99. I haven't noveled this much for an answer in quite some time.
As you can tell I completed my limited amount of space but have a little more to go. If you decide that my answer is the best please give it to me on my Psycho Dude 99 account; not this one. Thank you.
My Honorable Mentions: JBL: Just short of making #5. Though Orton made Taker’s old character shoewhat renewed, it was Taker’s amazing rivalry with JBL that really brought him back into WWE. For months he had been struggling to slip his way back into WWE.
And this rivalry officially made the statement that Taker was back and better than ever. Him and JBL had classic beat down brawls with an incredible storyline following it up. Congrats JBL and Taker.
You gave us a fun filled rivalry. Edge: A rightful feud of the year. It really cemented Taker back into WWE as a top name.
For months at this time he had been struggling to find himself in WWE. He hadn’t been up to much and this feud gave him something to do once more. And along the way it was both creative and had amazing matches surrounding it.
Ric Flair: This is a rivalry that stands out to me for the year 2002. Taker was becoming the ultimate @ss kicker at this time and I loved the storyline around it. Not just the storyline; but for the 1st time ever; and only time ever, I really liked him as the American Bad @ss.
He was kicking everyone’s @ss and taking names. And with him terrorizing Ric’s family and putting on an incredible and what I consider underrated match with him at Wrestlemania X8, Ric is definitely worthy of being mentioned as a great rival of Taker. Brock Lesnar: Brock just won the World Title and I’m sure many thought he wasn’t ready for it.
I personally was rooting for The Rock during his match with Brock at Summerslam and thought Brock would definitely lose. However Brock won. And this led to a great rivalry and outstanding Hell in a Cell match.
His feud with Taker put him over with all the fans and actually made him face. He did nothing face worthy; he just hung with Taker and therefore won the fans respect. This rivalry helped make Brock’s career.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
