Photographers, what techniques do you use to help people loosen up in front of the camera?

I just chat.... I can chat for 45 minutes with a tree...and I tell lots of personal stories. Basically, I just make people feel like they are my best friend, cause for that moment they are. I'm just a warm, personable person and people tend to loosen up around me.

I warn them about stupid things about me, like I change my mind alot and I'm terrible with names so I do alot of pointing and scooting. If there are little kids, I play with them a minute. Basically I just wait a few minutes and get people to warm up.

I also have this great story I love to tell people about how when my hubby and I got engaged they made him stand on a box, cause he's just a hair shorter than I am, I crack up everytime and I think it makes most people realize I'm a down-to-earther. Having your photo taken shouldn't be a chore, and too many people act like it is! Help them loosen up!.

Be friendly and use props! I would suggest being friendly and casual rather than barking orders. Try to engage them in small talk.

Also, the use of age appropriate props can work miracles! Make the photo shoot fun, not work! .

Give them a prop, like a cup of coffee. I did marketing for a law firm and we took attorney photos - can't you see the stiff poses and fake smiles. The Marketing Director asked each attorney to bring in a prop, anything they wanted, to be a part of the picture.

Some were pretty crazy, like full scuba gear and toy planes. Overall it was fun and had a great response. After we took these silly pictures we had them take a non-prop pictures and those pictures turned out amazing.

Everyone was relaxed and natural looking. One of the toughest attorneys didn't bring in a prop because she thought it was silly and would make her look unprofessional. I handed her a branded coffee mug and she instantly fell into a natural stance.

We snapped a few pictures took the mug away and ended up with a terrific shot.

Portraits When I'm shooting candids or even portraits, the subjects always have that deer-in-the-headlights look. You can say "smile" or "cheese" 'til hell freezes over and it just doesn't work. What does work is to look at 'em deadpan and say "Don't look at me, look at the bartender".

The reactions are priceless. Works in bars, of course. Works better in church.

:) .

Be loose yourself There are many other things I'm sure you can try, but far and away, if you are comfortable and self-assured, people will be comfortable with you taking their picture. Picture this, a person avoids eye contact, hides, sneaks around and every once in a while takes a picture. Everyone is going to think that person is up to no good.

But on the other hand, if you act like you belong there, act with a purpose, and behave in a natural and friendly way, it will put everyone at ease. My experience regarding this is that when I take random photos, just to shoot really, I feel very awkward and I've found people very likely to give me a hard time; when I shoot for my paper though, and act with a purpose, no one troubles me. This is a life lesson as well...how you behave effects how people react towards you.

I used to think that people just never approached me. I later realize, I was sending people signals not to approach me. Head down, eyes down, closed body posture etc.... Hope this helps!.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
