If you want to shoot night-scapes with silhouettes of objects against a star field, your 18-55 mm lens will work just fine. You just need to get far enough away from city or town lights so you and your camera can see the stars AND you need a good sturdy tripod. If you are interested in shooting deep space, then you really need a telescope with a computer controlled motor to keep it aimed at the same spot in space as the earth moves around its axis and orbit during long exposures You can by a 1000 mm telescope with computer controlled motor for under $500.
A Nikkor 800 mm telephoto lens costs $17,000. You can probably see why astronomers use telescopes instead of expensive camera lenses. You my get some good help by attending one your your local astronomy clubs and see what they use to photograph the heavens Here is a link to get you started.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
