For school groups, ask the orchestra teacher if you can play. For community groups, build a reputation, then get to know the people who direct music for the shows. For professional level or Broadway, get your degree in music performance, built up your resume, join the union, contact the contractors who will often want you to play an audition, and wait for an opportunity to come along.
