If you are new to editing and find the Pro apps confusing (no surprise), you need to start with entry-level programs or commit to a lot of reading and practice. Stick with apps like Premiere Elements, Sony Vegas, Pinnacle , or even Movie Maker until you get the basics. The pro apps can be overwhelming if you don't know what you are doing.
Regarding After Effects, It's not a video editor and shouldn't be used like one. It is more complicated if used properly. It is used with your editor.
Video editors don't really come with a lot of effects since that is not the role of the editing app. Effects are done in post-production using a compositing app like After Effects. Even then, many of the really cool effects are made by 3rd parties and you have to buy them.
Your goal should be to learn basic editing as quickly as possible so you can get to the real editors and then add After Effects to your repertoire. It sounds like a lot (and it is) but if you really want to get into this, it's worth it and you'll be glad you did.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
