You really have to look at each individual child and assess them separately. Some children may be easily traumatized by something that others may not be bothered with at all. You really have to set limits on what a child watches and keep the rules enforced to prevent them from watching something that could be potentially upsetting.
Once it has been watched it cannot be unwatched and you may be dealing with the aftermath for a long time. In my house we do not have the tv on at all during the week, and on the weekends we ask what the kids want to see and allow 2 hours per day of approved tv shows, so they really have to budget their time. I know it sounds like I am keeping them in bubble wrap, but they are 7 and 8, and until I am sure they are mentally and emotionally capable of dealing with questionable tv content that is the way it is going to stay.
I'm sure it's possible I'm in middle school and in October 2011 I watched a movie called insidious it was the worst and I can still every once in awhile see those images if I start thinking about it. It definetly has to do with being age appropriate and my advice is NEVER let your kids watch insidious till there like 40!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
