There are a few problems with the previous answer. While yes, it's more likely to get a false positive than a real one, doctors do still use the NT scan as an indicator for more testing. However, that testing is not an amniocentesis anymore -- doctors have now switched to using a test called the Harmony or Materni21 test, which is a simple blood draw from the mother, not the baby.
This test has really only been introduced in the last 18 months; it isolates the fetal DNA in the mother's blood so it doesn't need to be collected by an amniocentesis. Even if your doctor did order an amniocentesis, which used to be the next step before the introduction of the new tests, the risk of fetal harm isn't "very high", it's around 2%. There are more reasons to do an amnio than to determine whether to abort -- it, like any other diagnostics, gives the parents the ability to prepare for what may happen when the baby is born, including having a special needs child, having a child that may require immediate surgery or life support, etc. An amniocentesis is not just for parents who are debating termination, and I'm sure there are plenty of women who have been through an amnio who would find that sentiment very insulting.
Any baby is a blessing and you are right, you won't love your sweet one any less, no matter what happens! This test using ultrasound scan is notoriously inaccurate. In fact, there is such a high rate of false positives that it's more likely to get a false positive than a real one.
Ultrasound scan is incredibly inaccurate. Doctors are trained to use them and so they believe that they can be useful diagnostic tools but the fact is that they are incredibly unreliable. Especially at 13 weeks!
If your doctor thinks that your baby is at high risk for having DS, they will do an amniocentesis (amnio). This procedure is not at all necessary and actually carries a very high risk of fetal death. An amnio is done to confirm DS for parents who want to terminate pregnancy.
If you do not want to terminate and want your baby no matter what, then you may want to forego this test as it poses a very high risk to your baby and does not actually help anything at all. It's just to diagnose if you want to abort. You can skip the amnio if you choose to keep your baby.
At age 20, your risk of having a baby with DS is about 1 in 1,667. Good luck, mama! Your baby is most likely going to be just fine.
And congratulations on your pregnancy!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
