The republicans are completely blind to the fact that there are TWO demographics in the "poor" class. They see only the people who make a living off the system, and are completely oblivious to the families that put in a combined total of 80-120 hours a week in multiple jobs while they try to keep all the kids healthy, aging parents fed and housed, worn out cars n the road; and still scrape together enough nickels to give their children a better life than they have.

False. Growing up we were not wealthy and because of what my parents taught me I had good work habits. I don't think it had to do with how much money we had it had to do with what my parents instilled in me.

I think that statement is unfortunate but typical of Newt Gingrich. There are some that call that "a dog whistle" for his conservative base. A man who has an account of over $500,000 at Tiffany's can't identify with the working poor in the black community.

He is saying that they don't have black fathers who are role models for the Protestant work ethic. How smug. Even when there is no father in the home, there is always a working mother who is working as a cook, a maid, NY transit, etc. That is a real working role model, a woman taking care of her kids.

He is famous for his gaffes and has no right to make statements about the poor. He knows nothing about the poor, black or white, or what their struggles are. This is what is running for president-- a smug, white elitist who has no knowledge or empathy for the disadvantaged.

I hope he continues talking himself right out of the race.

" Honestly, more and more I wonder if we've ever moved past the Victorians in our attitudes toward the poor. The same old stereotypes, the same old dismissals, the same old cry, "Let the Churches deal with it," seem to persist. As Jacob Marley says, "Mankind was my business. " When are we going to make mankind our business?

Anyway, there's a very good Op-Ed piece in the NYTimes that appeared yesterday. It addresses Newt's claims that poor children don't have good work habits. Statistics say (surprise, susprise) this claim is untrue.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
