Pre-built computer or build my own? (Gaming PC)?

YES, building your own gaming desktop computer is better, cheaper and also very rewarding. Buying is not a good solution for a gaming PC, even custom ordering is not so good. Manufacturers and PC builders want to get as much money from you for as less computer as they can trick you into buying... Building a computer is very simple, and lots of tutorials, including video tutorials are available on the Internet.

If your budget is $1000 your best bet is definitely to build it yourself. Most consumer "Gaming" setups come with a very run-of-the-mill graphics card. You should go to a few local computer stores, ask them what you can get for your budget and build it with them.

However, getting 60+ FPS out of BF3 on high is tough for a lot of rigs. I spent more than 1K on my computer and I get about 40.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
