I've had to explain these verses many times. First, you have to look at the whole chapter to get the context of what it is they are explaining. A few things are mandatory before anyone is killed.
1) There needs to be two witnesses 2) They need to take the offender before the judges. 3) The whole community is to pick up stones and stone the person. If any of the three requirements is absent, then the person lives.
In other words, a person cannot become a vigilante and go around killing anyone they please. Also we need to determine just how often the death sentence is carried out. In ancient Israel, there was no such thing as DNA samples, fingerprinting, or forensics specialists.
The best they had were eye witnesses. If there was only one eye witness, the person lived. So you could imagine just how easy it would have been to get away with murder.
However, there is ample evidence of many religious communities, such as the Amish and some Jewish settlments in Israel, where murder is non-existant. Also consider that in some religious societies, such as the Amish, there aren't any prisons. This is also the case for ancient Israel.
Because of the Amish's ease to forgive the sinner, many sexual crimes continue in their community. Therefore I can understand why God commanded a harsh punishment for adultery. Instead, in many countries, we but a sex offender in jail for a few years and release the person only for that person to reoffend.
Mkay Jamie im glad you have learned what the Old testament is. To be honest im sure most Christians do not feel it necessary to defend anything in the old testament considering it was a covenant with the Jews and the christian religion did not exist at the time. The New Testament is what christians live by.
I so much enjoy educating ignorant self proclaimed "intellectual" atheists who pride themselves on judging christians based off of Old Testament teaching and ancient crusades.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
