As a martial arts teacher I know my students. It is my job to know my students. If I knew that one of my students is a bully I will not teach him and he is asked to leave.
I never had to do this. I have asked students to leave for misusing what I taught but they were not really bullies, just poor judgment. Generally hard training takes a lot of discipline and takes certain personality traits which bullies do not have.
Like following instructions, patience, working together as no one in martial arts makes it on their own. If you don't treat others well no one wants to be your partner and work with you. A bully simply would not survive long enough in a hard training environment to actually learn something of value.
I have had bullies join and they leave after the first class. It just simply is not their environment and it is the responsibility of a teacher to create this kind of environment and set certain expectations that people who will misuse what you teach simply can not comply and leave on their own. The only way I can imagine such a thing happening is when the teacher himself is a bully.
But this too would be very rare as it is not in the nature of a bully to teach others. Their nature is control and such a teacher usually does not last either.
Liondancer hit the nail on the head. He/she sounds like a great teacher, and I hope I am too since I follow the same principles and moralities along with teaching martial applications. There is an issue, though; there are schools with teachers who aren't so good.
I don't usually like to use examples from media, but think back to "The Karate Kid": Sensei Kreese was a horrible person and a bully himself. There really are teachers like that out there. There are also schools that allow anybody to train so long as they keep up with their payments.
Thankfully, bad teachers and bad schools usually tend to have bad techniques. Not always, but usually. That is one saving grace.
With a bad attitude, one doesn't fully appreciate what is being taught beyond the physical. Bullies can earn black belts, but not all black belts are the same.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
