1 Racism is little more than hating what you fear or don't understand.
2 I disagree with Turbo, which is not unusual! I do agree that for many it can be based on fear of the unknown, but I don't think that explains it enough. I think the discussion you had with your friends was very revealing.
Think of it in terms of circles. The middle of everyone's circle is him or herself. Then comes family.
Then comes the people close to family, then culture/tribe/ethnic group, etc. That which is closest or closer to you is more comfortable to you and if that circle does well, also elevates you. There is an interesting paradox going on in American culture right now. We speak for equality, equal opportunities, etc. , yet there are Black pride events, Latin culture celebrations, Chinese cultural fairs, etc. These are not bad and I am not speaking negatively about them, but they are very much serving to emphasize the differences in cultures.
I have joked (well, it was partly joking anyway) about needing a white male appreciation day and been slammed hard for it. But you see what is going on? Each group wants to be 'more equal' than the others, with special privileges, holidays, etc. It's not an economic class issue -- that is another can of worms.
But racism/tribalism is based on 'me' and who 'I' am first and then extends out from there. The only way I personally know to avoid that is through Jesus Christ, in whom we consider ourselves last and not first, thus erasing that egocentric circle.
3 Good question. It's about how individuals identify with the groups to which they belong. They achieve a comfort level with their group and feel discomfort with intruders.
Race gets our attention because of the visual effect. But here at AV we don't know what race others belong to unless they reveal it, so any racism is suppressed in favor of the AV community. Same thing with economic class but there the bigotry is more pronounced.
Many people express their hatred towards corporate executives. Others like Kymlor express contempt for "whiskey tango", which stands for white trash. It's not just humans since it occurs in the animal kingdom -- lions vs hyenas, howler monkey troops (takes two troops for howling), acorn woodpecker colonies (antagonistic to outsiders and to Stellar Jays).
Kymlor replied to post #3: 4 I know lots of corporate executives...Never met a "Whiskey Tango" executive though.. Once you enter the corporate world, you may no longer marry your sister.. Bad Form! .
Race definitely plays a role in the discord between peoples around the world. But, race is far more complex than just Black and White. Let’s limit ourselves to the US, which is complicated enough.
Assemble a roomful of "Blacks". Some may be descendants of African slaves violently extracted from their homes and shipped and sold to European settlers in America. Others may be descendants of slaves and slave owners.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
