Re Legal Gambling: Yesterday, in NY a Sports bet ring was busted. 12 arrested. They were taking in between 5 and 10 million a year - For at least the last five years.

QUESTION - Why don't the Government, once and for all, legalize gambling - take over these type operations - and cash in on the additional revenue? Is it that Organized Crime has the Government "pressured"? We have Lotteries - bingo - Church Las Vegas Nights - etc... and these illegal betting rings are going to operate anyway - If people want to use them they will - If they don't want to use them - they won't.

How much longer will politicians continue to ignore the facts? Does the public really enjoy paying higher taxes? Asked by gandg22 37 months ago Similar questions: Legal Gambling Yesterday NY Sports bet ring busted 12 arrested taking Games & Leisure > Gambling.

Don't blame the politicians. They are just responding to the perceived preferences of the voters. By way of background, "Under US federal law, gambling is legal in the United States, and states are free to regulate or prohibit the practice.

Gambling has been legal in Nevada since 1931, forming the backbone of the state’s economy, Las Vegas is perhaps the best known gambling destination in the world. In 1976, gambling was legalized in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and in 1990, it was legalized in Tunica, Mississippi; both of those cities have developed extensive casino and resort areas since then. Since a favorable U.S.Supreme Court decision in 1987, many Native American tribes have built their own casinos on tribal lands as a way to provide revenue for the tribe.

Because the tribes are considered sovereign nations, they are often exempt from state laws banning gambling, and are instead regulated under federal law. Additionally almost all states have legalized gambling in the form of a lottery. Why isn’t gambling wide open everywhere like it is in Nevada? Its probably because a majority of the voters aren’t as concerned and organized to fight for it as the opponents are concerned and organized to fight against it. Church groups, particularly evangelical Christian churches, are already organized. So for them it takes very little effort to mount a campaign against legalizing gambling in a given state.

Mental health groups oppose legalized gambling because they believe that gambling preys upon compulsive gambliers. http://www.helpguide.org/mental/gambling_addiction.htm http://www.lostbet.com/?gclid=CNLn15WO85YCFQZinAodVSdiYQ http://www.nongambler.com/ Good government groups oppose gambling because they see it as an invitation to organized crime and corruption. They may be right about that in the abstract, but they do ignore who is running illegal betting operations now and why they are able to flourish now.

Law enforcement opposed legalized gambling because if it is illegal, they have people to arrest and people to pay them off. Many businesses oppose legalized gambling because, they reason, if it is legalized more people will gamble, adding competition for the consumer’s discretionary income. They do have a point there.

People who would never dream of placing an illegal bet will quite willingly place bets on lots of things in Atlantic City, Nevada and other gambling establishments around the country. All of the aforementioned groups are much better organized than the regular Joe or Jane who might lay down an occasional bet if gambling was legal. In politics, the better organized have a lot more sway than the unorganized. http://www.library.ca.gov/crb/97/03/Chapt1.html The trend towards legalization is increasing, since currently, 27 of the 50 states allow some form of gambling in their state.

http://www.library.ca.gov/crb/97/03/Chapt1.html My guess is that eventually every state in the Union will have some form of legal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambling0 will take time, but it looks like it is going to happen eventually--for better or for worse. 1 Probably even if the government took over the illegal bookies would exist as the government is generally very greedy regarding the vig...government is generally not happy with a couple percent...they are happy with things like the lottery where they take 50% off the top.

3 The government especially the right side of the house thinks gambling is a sin that we need to be protected from. It basically comes down to the fact that it is a risky issue for a politician...you really do not want to attach your name to bills that push for legalized gambling. BTW...I agree with you 100%...the government should legalize it so it can be properly taxed.

Just because many forms of gambling are illegal like you said it does not stop anyone who wants to gamble from gambling. No doubt there are some people who do have a problem with it but there are many times more that are responsible with their gambling and legalizing it would probably not effect either group much.

4 If all states (who currently oppose legalized gambling) have Lotteries and bingo and horse racing etc. Why do they consider some forms of gambling OK and others taboo - Even most religious organizations have some form of gambling - when it suits their needs.

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
