Sandra Bullock just donated 1 million dollars for Haiti. Do you think celebrities do it out of the goodness of their heart or for publicity?

When stars donate to worthy causes, it probably has a little bit to do with both generosity/empathy and publicity. Making such a grand donation in face of the tragic occurrence in Haiti can quickly bring the spotlight back on some of the stars who may have faded into the background for a while. It can make many stars look very generous, good hearted, and even heroic to donate some of their hard-earned money to people they do not know in order to help these individuals build their lives back up after a catastrophe.

Doing so can also divert attention from some stars’ hotly debatable personal lives, if applicable. On the other hand, why shouldn’t celebrities donate some money to those in need? One million dollars may seem like a lot to us, but it is actually just a tiny fraction of a star’s annual income.

While, any amount of money is likely helpful in such a tragic event, such grand donations by celebrities can truly make a difference. However, when it comes to such a large-scale natural catastrophe as the quake in Haiti, a few million dollars will likely not take care of the whole situation, nor will it bring back loved ones lost in the tragedy. Yet, celebrities often mention having a sort of civil responsibility to help others less fortunate after having been blessed with a special talent that helped them become rich and famous. In Sandra Bullock’s case, it may not become readily apparent what her precise reasons were for donating the money.

While she likely contributed out of heart-felt empathy, she probably also enjoys the publicity that accompanied this generous act. And who wouldn’t? Many of us would probably enjoy being publicly mentioned for doing a good deed, even if it wasn’t our prime motivation.

There were also other celebrities, such as Wyclef Jean (who was born in Haiti), who had a personal interest in offering aid to the victims of the Haiti quake. Therefore, while there may certainly be some celebrities taking advantage of the situation to make themselves more popular by donating, a great percentage of them is likely contributing to help in the restoration process of the country. I like to believe in the goodness of humanity, even if we are sometimes driven by egoistic motives.

I think that Sandra Bullock is one of those people that often donates to charity. And I'm sure more do but not all get on the front page news. Some donate their time, which is equal to money in many respects.

When a star is a spokesperson for a cause, that may bring more to the cause than just a one time donation. Ongoing donations are what most seek. She doesn't strike me as someone that does anything for the sheer publicity of it.

If she did then we would see her in the news more often. As it is, she really only comes out when she is promoting something. Other than that she seems to keep to herself and her family.

Even during the custody battle she is in for her step-daughter, I don't see her really using her celebrity status to get any additional favors. And it barely makes news as well. I think it's great when celebs can give to noteworthy causes and if they get good publicity at the same time then more power to them.

I believe she did what she felt led to do by her own spirit. I have not seen her as a publicity seeking person like so many other celebrities. What a lovely thing to do .

Well that depends on the celebrity I guess. Some do it just cuz they want to redeem their reputation or on up their peers. I think Sandra Bullock is a nice person and I feel she did this out of the kindness of her heart.

As it is possible and fairly easy to donate to a charity without giving out your identity I am sure that those who are doing it for only the common good are the ones we do not read about. Part of the appeal of an actor or actress is how many fans they can draw to a film or show. Charitable acts are one way to increase the draw.

That being said I do not believe it is the only reason, perhaps it is not even the major reason for the donation, but if the donation is done with publicity then publicity is part of the goal.
