Sewing question. I'd like to shorten a child's pants by 5 inches in a reversible way. Idea's?

I'd like them short while being worn, but able to lengthen to original length (children get taller) and also for washing. (These are thick wool longies. They take 2 days to dry as it is.

If I don't unroll them for washing, drying time will be unreasonable. )I picture possibly a button and loop to fold them up and secure, but buttons are a choking hazard for kids under 3.......... 3 Yeah, I think velcro is the best solution. Sew one side to the inside of the pants, 10 inches up. Sew the other side to the outside of the pants at the hem.

When you stuff them inside and tack the velcro together, it'll take 5 inches off.
