It's a side effect of this sad circumstance. It's obviously his financial responsibility, as THEY are attempting to reimburse him. My best suggestion, to get him this check, would be to have a person he trusts, or respects, inform him of this situation.
They should tell him to grow-up, and behave in the best interests of his child. How he feels about his ex, needs to be secondary to the well being of his child. The child is an innocent in this mess.
The child should not suffer for Dad's stupidity, and childishness.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
