Should I clean old lionel train set?

Well, then it depends. If you are selling it to some private person, who just wants to give it to his child or grandchild, I would clean it up. If you are selling it to a collector, or one of these people with huge train collections, I would not clean it until after they have seen it and agreed to buy it.

If you clean it, you run the risk of washing off paint, or ruining the finish or decals,etc. That would devalue it, to a collector.

I wouldn't, leave it as is, and let the buyer decide. Washing the patina off may ruin the value. At most I'd dust it off.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
