Should I get Skyrim even though I didn't play Oblivion?

Get neither. The last worthwhile Elder Scrolls game was Morrowind, and Daggerfall was fantastic. It seems that Bethesda forgot how to make games as of late considering that Oblivion had a 15 minute main story and lacked quest diversity (all quests boil down to locating/killing something/someone and most of those are merely to advance in guilds with very generic, trite side-stories thrown in); Fallout 3 was god-awful and New Vegas was mediocre at best (had a great soundtrack and endearing characters, though) You'll only find the same in Skyrim.

The main story can be completed in 2 hours, and that's really only due to dialogue (which by the way, is very generic and poorly done). The quests yet again lack diversity, and the "combat" is overly simplistic. It also doesn't help that level-scaling (a mechanic that levels all enemies when the player character levels) really takes away the fun of leveling If you missed out on playing any older RPGs like Summon Night: Swordcraft Story (which is a little too story centric for my tastes), Chrono Trigger or Dragon Quest, I'd recommend you play those instead.

If you just NEED a current-gen RPG, I recommend Demon's Souls and Dark Souls; if you're a fan of SRPGs and anime, Valkyria Chronicles is fairly decent, too and has quite unique gameplay, and an okay story.

It's completely fine. Skyrim is set 200 years after oblivion so it's not a problem. Some references are made but you can easily look on the elder scrolls wiki and read up the history and the lore.

Unlike most sequel the story in each elder scrolls is completely seperated as they each take place in different continents but the overall story remains and skyrim progresses on this but the wiki will fill you in better than most people here.

Yes, the Elder Scrolls games don't exactly follow up on eachother story-wise, plus Skyrim is an amazing game and the best out of all of them. Get it.

Skyrim takes place 700 years after oblivion, so the storys don't really collide.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
