I just want to commend you for considering the service. Too many young people rule it out. I faced the same dilemma you now face many years ago.
I joined the army, and I have never had any regrets. It was a great decision. I know other guys who joined the marines and they also served honorably and did not regret their decision.
The main thing is to be true to yourself. The Army is a much larger Force than the marine corps. It has a lot more job choices and opportunities than the Marines.
The Marines is a great choice if you are a person into tradition and honor and glory. Army would be the best choice for a career with opportunity and diversity of career options. If you have already decided upon infantry the army or marines would be suitable.
Just one thing mate, not any fool can make it through basic. If that were true, there would be no lack of fools lining up to get in. It takes dedication and commitment and hard work, sweat and tears to get through military training.
For a lot of guys it is the very first time they have been away from home for any length of time, and it is a mentally, physically and psychologically challenging situation. The AIT or Individualized training after basic is even harder. Except you are then considered a member and not just a Cruit.
You have several options available upon recruitment on your initial enlistment, and those I am sure have changed since I was in so many decades ago, but they normally limit the first enlistment to 4 years, although that may have changed. I enlisted for four years initially, and re-upped for 3 more. I decided for myself to get out after that.
If I had it to do over, I would stay in for the twenty. It is a great option to be able to retire after twenty years of service. Good Luck to you and lose the attitude if you want to really succeed in the military.
My vote goes to the Army. I won't try to say "oh soldiers are better, Marines are dumb" no one branch is better or worse than they other, they all fulfill their own specific missions. A marine infantrymans job is very similar to an Army Infantrymans.
There are subtle differences A marine's basic training is longer, but the army has more opportunity for schools such as airborne, pathfinder, ranger etc. In the Army you will find more opportunity for career progression. In the Marine Corps you will find an unmatched esprit de corp, but most people will not re-enlist pay is the same. Same equipment There is always bragging rights "I was a marine", plus their dress uniforms look freakin' tight...way better than our greens, or even our blues.
Their cover is better looking than our patrol cap, unless you can ranger roll that thing. They can roll up their sleeves in their uniforms, we cannot. In the Army you have a better chance of making a life out of the service.
If you wished to stay local, both the Army and the USMC have reserve corps..the Army does benefit from a National guard. It all is up to personal preference bud, I'm in the Army, but I sometimes dream of being a Marine you can always switch and do both.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
