Should students use iPads in the classroom?

As an educational tool the ipad potentially represents a huge leap forward in how kids learn. I am in favor of e-textbooks for a number of reasons including costs and instant access to data. Being able to have everything in one place means kids will never get home from school to realize that the book they need is in their locker.

Also the potential to integrate into a calendar can make it easier for parents to check if their kids have actually done their homework and know if there are big projects coming up and monitor their progress. The multi-media capabilities can be used to add demonstrations that students can watch when they are out of class. With anything there is the potential for kids to misuse it.

Before there is widespread adoption there would need to be software that can lock down an ipad to restrict what apps can be accessed.

I think there are some advantages and disadvantages to using an iPad in the classroom. One advantage of having textbooks as ebooks is that there is never a worry about forgetting the book as long as you have your iPad with you. On the other hand, I think having a physical book is good too because you can write in it, highlight important things, unless of course you don't own the textbook and it's just borrowed from the school.

I think a huge disadvantage is students just playing around with other apps on their iPad and not paying attention to the teacher. Kids don't always pay attention anyway, but this would make it that much more easy to ignore the teacher and play a game or read another book, etc. I don't think I would allow iPad use in the classroom if I was a teacher. Maybe I am just old fashioned but I prefer the use of physical textbooks and a blackboard with chalk.

I can see many benefits of students using an iPad in the classroom setting. However, I wonder what else they would be doing instead of homework or research. A student could look up geography, mathematical equations, as well as music theory in a matter of seconds but in that period they could also be researching how to build a bomb, pillage a country or God knows what else.

I know not all children would look up things they should not be, but some would! It is a small percentage of children that could disturb the educational experience for all. There is so much to learn see and do on an ipad that perhaps unless the child is totally focused on school it could be a hindrance.

Ipads should only be used by college students or a few years before college. It is an expensive gadget and parents should not be pressured by teachers and schools to buy them because it will be used in school. Although it stores a lot of information and is a very handy gadget for students to use and do research, it can be too distracting to them most specially these days when social networking sites are the norm for communication with friends. An e-textbook has many advantages compared to the actual textbook but an actual textbook can still be a good tool for studying and reading.

Besides, subjects are scheduled every other day or at least 2 times a week and a particular student will not bring all of his textbooks in school everyday. Ipads can also store multiple applications and games which is another distraction for students during school time. I would only allow my child to have one during his or her college years and if he or she gets good grades depending on my standards.

I am completely against the use of iPads in the classroom at any level. I'm a college student, and I find it distracting enough that students surf the web, check ESPN, watch movies (on mute), IM one another on their laptops/smartphones; I think it's shocking and disrespectful. I think it's hard enough to concentrate in class let alone being distracted by gadgets around me.

What could you possibly need to look up on wikipedia that you couldn't just ask your professor and help out the class in the process? Technology should only be used when everyone is using it, as part of the class. It gives students the excuse to not be prepared, who can just google an answer and look like they know the material. It doesn't give professors an accurate gauge of how well their students know the material.

Technology can enhance the learning experience, but not in a lecture/note taking setting. It's distracting and puts students on an unfair playing field.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
