I'm sorry but the big brains in gaming know for decades that realism isn't the major direction to go for games. And that applies to many levels, graphics, gameplay, required actions (who wants to clean the latrines in a military game?). %% Wargames are a special breed as they gain from being closer to realism.
Just for example, graphics. A 3D wargame in Combat Mission can do realistic ranges, which makes for ugly pictures. The mass games all have shooting distances that places the opponents at about Gun fight at the OK corral distance, because people want to see the action.
But in the gameplay department, realism in wargaming is that self-serving. Wargames are realistic because they need to fit the frame of mind of the player. The player has expectations, mainly from reading military books, sometimes from own service, hopefully not too much from movies.
The player expects that tactics described as effective in the "references" will be effective in the game. But supporting proper ... more.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
