Since Jesus Christ was from the middle east, wouldn't one think he would possess middle eastern physical traits?

I'm a white guy but I don't think Jesus was white. I mean what white people were roaming around Jeruselum and Bethlehem now or ever? I would think he would look similair anyone living in Israel today.

I never understood why he was ever depicted as white (or black for that matter). Asked by 100Kclub 56 months ago Similar questions: Jesus Christ middle east possess eastern physical traits Society > Religion & Spirituality.

In general, people represent God in their own image... just as in the Genesis story the Gods make humanity in their image. We can see this same principle at work as regards lifestyle and values as well. It's much easier to imagine a Jesus who endorses and so justifies your own lifestyle than it is to challenge your lifestyle and values with the example of a Jesus whose values are effectively foreign to your own. This principle of 'converting a god into the local language' isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Gotta run...

I think that you are absolutely right and the Bible backs up your point of view. It is obvious from the passages about Jesus’ arrest in the garden that he didn’t stand out physically and looked just like the average guy in the street. This is made abundantly clear by the fact that the soldiers didn’t know whom to arrest until Judas identified Jesus with a kiss.

If he had looked like an oriental, a black or a Nordic blonde haired blue eyed type they would have known exactly who he was without having to have Judas identify him. Statues and paintings of Jesus or Mary that depict them with blonde hair have always bothered me because they can’t be at all accurate Sources: my opinion .

Should be tan A prime example of how religion has been skewed over the centuries to meet peoples needs. Another argument for lack of belief in what is in the bible. I would assume since he is a Hebrew born in Jeruselum that he would be darker complected as he grew up in the desert and would have dark tan skin..

I don't think he was white either. I'm white, too, and I don't think Jesus was white. I agree that he probably looked more like those from the middle east.

I think that most people try to depict Jesus as a member of their own race, as I've seen him depicted with blond hair, dark hair, light skin, dark skin, straight hair, curly hair, dark eyes, blue eyes, etc. I'm not sure why - possibly people feel more comfortable projecting their own race onto him to make themselves somehow feel closer to him. Great question! By the way, this Wikipedia page has some great images and some great theories to help with your research!

My theory I think that what happens is that artists portray Christ with physical characteristics similair to what they are accustomed to seeing. As for why the white depictions started, in the Medieval and Rennaissance periods artists (and others) weren’t terribly concerned with historical accuracy (as seen in paintings that depict Mary receiving the announciation dressed in expensive fabrics (made up in then-modern styles) and/or in cathedrals (or other then-modern buildings). The practise continued through today.

I think that Christ was probably similair in appearance to Middle Eastern Jews, but we don't know where exactly Mary was from and the fact that he was half-diety creates a bunch of other interesting questions as to what He would look like. Bottom line: While I typically prefer ethnically Jewish depictions, I don't think it is important to the eternal salvation of anyone and it doesn't hurt anything to have artists depict Christ with features and skin tone similair to themselves. I hope that helps..

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
