Hubby and I live in a house with fairly high ceilings - I guess 8 feet. We have no smoke detectors and neither of us has the steadiness to get on a stepladder and drill in the ceiling to mount one. Plus it would be hard to change the batteries in future years.
I realize we may have to hire someone, but first I wanted to find out if there are any that are effective mounted "sideways". Thanks. Asked by anniemdaffodils 14 months ago Similar questions: Smoke detectors successfully hung vertical walls ceilings Home > Home Improvement.

Smoke rises which is why smoke detectors are always ceiling mounted. How old is your house not to have smoke detectors? Hard wired detectors are required almost everywhere.
Not to sound like an alarmist, but you're risking your lives not to have a smoke detector. Dying by fire is not the most pleasant way of going. Do a simple test to satisfy your own curiosity: Buy a smoke detector and temporarily put it up on a wall.
Put bread in a toaster and over cook it until it gives off some smoke. If the detector didn't go off, you'll be toasted in the event of a fire. Break down and get a hard wired smoke detector with a battery backup.
If you don't have the financial resources to get it hard wired, at least get a battery operated detector and hire someone to climb the ladder. At a minimum, put one outside (NOT inside) your bedroom door on the ceiling.
Thanks very much. Your test sounds like a very good idea. We live in a 3 BR brick rancher, so, at the very least we need one at each end of the house, which would be kitchen and outside our BR.
Our kitchen is large enough to place one away from the stove. You are right - I need to buy the smoke detectors and maybe a CO detector as well and find someone who will install for hire. Thanks again.

All smoke detectors that I am aware of can be wall mounted. Take note, though, that they still need to be within a foot of the ceiling to be effective.
Current code specifies one inside each bedroom, and one within 10' outside any bedroom (if all the bedrooms are in one end, one detector can serve all three) it is not a requirement to put one in the kitchen, and most people prefer not to (some places actually require that if one is installed within 3 feet of a kitchen, bathroom, or furnace cold air return, it either be a model resistant to nuisance alarms, or with a hush button. ) if you're goin to pay to have it done, and you have an accessible attic, it would probably be best to have a hardwired set installed, but otherwise, 10 year rated detectors will meet code.
CO detector is advisable if you have gas appliances. They make those that plug into an electrical outlet, and do just fine.
Thanks very much. I have no gas appliances....your info is very helpful. Anniemdaffodils 14 months ago .
I tried to be relatively comprehensive without creating the wall-o-text.
What movie has worms coming out of the walls and ceilings.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
