Too many libs believe idiotic stereotypes, which shows their "progressive" mentalities. Certainly not. Remember, they despise the deep south just as much as the Appalachians, where I am, so we're all hillbillies and toothless, regardless.
We even got shoes for church and schoolin' and such. Honestly, we have Targets and Starbucks just like everyone in the deep south does. Everyone has modern amenities, just the same.
This is left over from the Civil War Reconstruction days because Pre-Civil War, Virginia was the academic state (University of VA, Thomas Jefferson was a graduate, etc.) and the Carolinas were a sophisticated, major areas for imports/exports from Europe. Post Civil-War, the south was reported as being economically and socially backwards and ignorant. It was propaganda.
The Jim Crowe Laws didn't exist until a decade or so after the Civil War, so when the Union was established in the area, that's when laws of segregation went into effect. But, you'll never see that anywhere because it's "politically incorrect," as the south lost.
South Florida is nothing like the Deep South. There are racist people from all parts of the country but it is generally more accepted in the South. In large part it's a class thing; poor white trash tends to be more racist than the upper classes and than is, per capita, more white trash in the South than other parts of the country.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
