Well, Henry, welcome to the listening adventure called "jazz"! Jazz is a vast auditory art form and much of it is purely instrumental. Jazz is made up of many "styles" such as swing, Dixieland, Cool, big band, bebop, fusion, avant-garde, third stream, smooth and more.
Many artists use different styles, but some artists are strongly associated with a particular style. Rather than tie yourself down to a specific artist, I think you should get started with jazz in another way. I recommend that you try a free jazz radio site on the internet called Accujazz: http://www.accujazz.com/ While there are other good jazz sites on the internet, Accujazz is so well organized, so easy to use (user friendly) and offers so many preset channels that a beginner can immediately get started enjoying jazz.
They have, for instance, channels for each decade, channels for each instrument, composer channels, jazz festival channels, style channels, etc with more to offer than you can imagine. Old jazz, new jazz, really cool jazz. It is so well organized and nicely laid out that you can't wait to start listening to something.
Right now I am listening to the "Groove Jazz" channel. This channel is very accessible for beginners but even old timers like me can enjoy it. No matter what kind of mood I am in, there is a channel set up to meet my mood!
I am certain you could find something you would like. P.S. Another really good thing about Accujazz is that their player opens in its own window. You just select a channel and it will play all day long without any additional input needed.
Though they ask for listeners to rate selections to help Accujazz refine their playlists, you don't have to do it. You can even close your browser and work on business papers or school work or whatever and Accujazz will keep on playing. You can change channels or research whatever is "now playing" on Amazon.com right from the player window!
BTW, the style "smooth jazz" might possibly interest you. Though it is considered a separate type of jazz and many jazz purists really dislike "smooth jazz" and say it is not "real jazz" (whatever that is) because it is frequently softer, repetitive, less challenging and less "intricate" than most other types. However, it is also frequently very beautiful, very catchy and rhythmic and there is nothing wrong with that.
I recently discovered that AccuJazz.com, is part of a larger organization called AccuRadio which also has a "smooth jazz site which features music that you may enjoy: http://www.accuradio.com/smoothjazz/ However, note that the "smooth jazz" player doesn't generate its own window as AccuJazz does.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
