The word Guru is made up of two words Gu---darkness and Ru---light. Hence, Guru means one who dispels darkness. Darkness refers to ignorance ,delusion, false notion and belief.
A child need mother to survive and so a devotee need Guru ,but it doesn't mean without Guru one can not attain enlightenment same as a child without mother can also survive . But only few can attain enlightenment without Guru it is because truth can be revealed only when mind surrenders completely. The mind itself cannot surrender ,to surrender another person on whom you have faith is essential.
And that person is GURU. God is the invisible truth ,Guru is the visible truth.
In spiritual arena, the rules are slightly different. The "ultimate" knows which tool fits well, and sends that 'one' to pick the disciple. There is no conflict or competition.
The 'others' simply make themselves available at all times, to supplement and/or complement the efforts of the 'one', and it is always a complete and perfect harmony. The disciple has very little choice. The disciple gets chosen, or 'picked'.
All that a disciple can do is keep oneself fine-tuned at all times, as much as possible. The 'picking' is infallible. It is always so that a master is in a far greater hurry than the disciple.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
