Those who believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster are called Pastafarians. They are not atheists, or at least they do not identify that way. Pastafarianism was conceived as a spoof religion created by a man who was frustrated that public schools in his area would be teaching the Christian creation myth as fact in place of scientifically accepted fact.
The aim was to say that every religion must be given equal credibility in the school system, and therefore they would also have to teach how the Flying Sphagetti Monster created the universe as fact even though they believed it was quite ridiculous. The point, in other words, was to give the people who were fighting for creationism in public school a taste of how ridiculous that sounds to those of us who accept science. However, Pastafarianism took off after that and now there are some people who take it quite seriously.
It can be hard to tell, from talking to a hardcore Pastafarian, whether they actually believe a word of what they're saying or not. I'd assume that most of them don't, but in either case they should be considered as separate from atheists. Atheists bring up Pastafarianism as a rhetorical device, often in the context of the burden of proof.
For example, a Christian may say "Can you PROVE that God doesn't exist?" to which the atheist can reply "Can you prove that the Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't exist?" Not only does it neatly demonstrate why the burden of proof rests on the party making the claim, it serves to humiliate the theist and establish that the intellectual tradition their beliefs descend from is just as nonsensical as Pastafarianism in the eyes of science. It's quite an effective talking point.
It is a parody of Christianity. Once upon a time, religious fundies wanted court ordered creationism taught in public schools. Opponents to this idea, said that the FSM was just as valid a belief, or as any other belief, and demanded equal time.
Now it has gone viral. The contempt you feel for the FSM, is the same contempt other people feel for other nonsense eg Christianity etc.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
