I feel we should all be honest in how we feel voting . And we should never vote unhelpful on any one unless you are sure in your mind that the answer was unhelpful Don't click unhelpful to get your rocks off . Be respectful to every on here .
Know we all here are family and we all try to help with answers. Even though the answers are not going the best all the time . It is the answer that you give is what matters in all you say.My way of voting unhelpful is to not vote unhelpful because it will all be the same .
If the person does not get a vote at all for being helpful or unhelpful my point is it all works out . I just don't vote at all for them.

If I ever click the "Unhelpful", I always put in an explanation. That way, the community grows and learns. I DO find it difficult in those rare occasions that, not only is the answer unhelpful, but it's also plain wrong.
Then the use might get a double hit from me - Unhelpful AND Refute Fact. Then I ABSOLUTELY must add a useful comment.
Thanks Dad! I'd also like to point out that clicking "unhelpful" just because you disagree with someone is poor form. Being "unhelpful" and "disagreeing" with someone are two completely different things.
Just because you disagree with someone does not make that person wrong. It's merely a different point of view. That said, if you use a Rice Krispies Treats recipe to explain the physics of a black hole, THAT is unhelpful.
Good update Jeff! Very important for folks to keep in mind that the concept behind the unhelpful button is to actually teach users--especially new ones--how to answer question really well. Like DrMatt says, always state why you voted it unhelpful and how the person can make it better.
Also, no one should ever target a user and vote their answers down.... that type of hostility will not tolerated by the community (as we've seen! ).
I hope this is just a wave in the big blue Mahalo sea. As long as we treat each each member how we would want to be treated ourselves, this problem should ebb like the next tide. I know I think long and hard before ever using 'unhelpful', and hope that everyone does the same.(peace).
Excellent points. I would only add that this content should really be on an official page like mahalo.com/how-mahalo-answers-works How Mahalo Answers Works.
Definitely AMEN Peace Love and Joy to all of you!
Albanian, I agree, adding a 'comment' to a question feature will will help but it will not necessarily deter members from the "temptation" to answer a question in only a few words in order to score points. Sorry to be a grumpy gus on this one - I'm just interested in keeping us 'honest' here.
Excellent post. I rarely have voted unhelpful, but when I do I always note why I did so. Same thing if there is only one answer to vote on but it's not a good one.
I tell the answerer why I voted "no best answer" so s/he can learn.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
