The reason why the movie was not released in theatres is because that would negate the attraction, marketing, and money power that the Disney channel and its corporate owner has gained. The producers of the movie thought the movie was good for TV, a quirky idea about high school kids going through their dramas while singing about it, and hence it was released on TV. However, after it became such a big hit, Disney flexed its marketing muscle and created a whole conclave of products and services that so far has proven a boon for Disney.

Releasing the sequel again on Disney chanel (which already airs almost 100% exclusive Disney Channel commercials), it allows a huge audience that Disney is trying to target-the kids and their parents- to get hooked on its other programming. Much like how Fox runs its programming around the ratings giant that is American Idol, so is Disney Channel. However, Disney has made so much more money than it could have if the movie was released in theatres, because so many of their own products have benefitted..

Disney underestimated their success Or at least, the success of the first one. It was just another Disney Channel Original Movie. Disney makes bunches of Original Movies for the Disney Channel all the time.

This wasn't anything special in the minds of the makers. It actually had a very small budget, in comparison to the phenomenon that it has become. And once it took off, the Disney marketing machine kicked into high gear.

You can find HSM DVDs, CDs, posters, books, merchandise, stage shows, ice shows, and much much more. I'm not immune to the phenomenon myself. I liked both movies (though the second not as much as the first), and bought the soundtrack to the first one from iTunes.

There is a third movie in production now, and this one will be released to theaters. The marketing machine finally caught up with the popularity, and they realized that gh School Musical 3 could produce a much higher revenue if people actually *paid* to see it. :-) Sources: getting my head in the game.

As I understand it they were both made for t.v. Movies. Why the second one was not released to theaters I am not sure.

Because it was made for the Disney Channel as a TV movie, not a theatrical film. Although the original TV movie was hyped on a level above and beyond the typical Disney Channel fare, the powers-that-be were probably much more confident that it would work better as a TV movie rather than a theatrical release. In many ways, making a TV movie is a better investment than making a feature film.

Think about it: Most theatrical films these days basically make all of their money in the first weekend (if they make any money at all), with a sharp decline afterwards. Moreover, if people actually see a film in the theater, they usually see it just once, and then wait four months for the DVD. Generally, theatrical films can make a lot of their budget back on DVD if they didn't make enough in theaters, but more cheaply-produced TV movies can make their budgets back in a single airing, thanks to advertiser dollars.In the case of HSM1+2, Disney gets to play the TV movie over and over and over again (with more advertising time added for extra $$$) on their channel, and they can then sell the same movie to the same kids three months later on DVD for at least 10 dollars over the normal theatrical ticket price.

Sounds like a good investment to me.
