Similar questions: raise GPA make transcript retake low grades classes.
It all depends It depends on how low the grade was and what the class was. If the class was in your major and you got a really low grade (D for example) Definitely retake the class and work hard for the best grade you can get. If the class has nothing to do with your major it is much less important.
If it also is a very difficult subject, I would leave the grade and move on. When you are applying for graduate school the GPA you have in your major will weigh more heavily than your overall GPA. If you tank a class, but it has nothing to do with your major or what you plan to study in grad school, it will hardly register.
I got my bachelors in art history, when I took the GRE my math score was really terrible (3rd percentile-ouch! ) my verbal score was really excellent, however. Since math has nothing to do with art history, it didn't really figure into my acceptance into grad school.
When you are applying for grad school, they will look at your overall GPA, but what matters most is your major - if you did well in the area you are specializing in that shows your commitment to it. If you are just chasing a high GPA for its own sake, or trying to graduate with honors, retake the class. But only if you feel confident that you will improve your grade.
But I wouldn't do this too often, the last grade you get will be the one that stands, but the fact that you re-took the class will still show on your transcript and that doesn't look good either. When people look at your transcripts, they will also look at the difficulty of the classes you took, so getting an A in a really easy class is less important than a B in a really difficult, upper division class. Keep in mind, that shortly after graduation, once your enter the workforce, your GPA starts to fade in importance.

Probably a little of both. If a grade is especially low, I would definitely take the class again. Taking more classes is ok, but the only way the math is going to work out is to guarantee you'll get high marks in the extra classes.
There's no shame is going for the "easy A" though.
I found it helpful to retake the course that I had the worst grade in. If you retake the courses are you sure that you will get a much better grade? At my university, when I took a course over and earned an "A", the "D" I had originally earned was no longer calculated in my GPA, so it helped raise my GPA a lot.
This was early in my undergrad career though, so I didn't have too many courses on my transcript yet. The original course grades will probably stay on your transcript...so you will have to explain the grades to potential employers. If you retake the course and do well, it will show that you did eventually master the material.
Good luck! .
In general, take new classes The reason for this is that many institutions will not allow you to "replace" grades. If they allow you to retake courses to replace grades then by all means do it. That would have the greatest impact.
If not, then take courses in which you feel confident. Good luck! .
Improvement can weigh more than success on the first try If you retake a class and show that you were able to stick with something and apply the necessary disciple in order to improve your first grade that will look better than just taking another easier class to raise the overall GPA .
